How this is ordered, and why it isn't obvious

Not by how important a skill is to your job. Reading Comprehension matters to nearly every occupation in America, which makes it useless as advice — everyone already has it and nobody moves anywhere by improving it.

Instead: for each of the 431 occupations with a route to somewhere more resistant, the register already computes which skills stand in the way. Aggregate that across the whole register — 3,392 gated routes — and you get a different question answered. Not what your job needs, but if you learn one thing, how many doors does it open.

The answer is mostly hands and equipment, which surprised us. The work that opens the most exits is not the work that sounds most modern.

This is a starting point, not a curriculum

• These are course links, not a plan. Each skill has one good destination behind it, chosen because it exists, is reputable and is reachable — not because we have assessed it against the others. Nobody here has taken these courses.
• A skill is not a job. Learning Repairing does not make you a technician. The routes it opens still need the rest of an occupation's profile, which is why every route on the site says how much of it you already have.
• The ranking is about the register, not about you. A skill that opens 194 routes nationally may open none from where you are standing. Your own occupation's page names the skills that gate your routes, which is the list that actually applies.
• Free to audit is not free to certify. Several of these let you take the whole course for nothing and charge only for the certificate. If the credential is the point, check before you start.
