A chemical engineer's screen work — mass and energy balances, Aspen/HYSYS model setup, P&ID markup, spec sheets, batch-record and technical-report writing, routine process-data trending — is exactly the kind of structured quantitative and document work AI now does at usable draft quality. What holds is the physical and accountable half: plant walkdowns, commissioning and startup, troubleshooting a fouling exchanger or off-spec batch on the floor, HAZOP/PHA leadership, and scale-up decisions where being wrong means a release or an explosion. The PE license matters in consulting and stamped work but the industrial exemption means most in-house process engineers work without a personal signature shield.
Mixed — a routine tier and a judgment tier. Roughly half the job — steady-state flowsheet convergence, sizing pumps and relief valves against API 520 tables, pulling DCS historian trends, drafting PSM-required operating procedures — is templated enough that AI produces a checkable first pass, but turnaround runs, distillation column troubleshooting on a live tower, and scale-up from bench to 10,000 gallons still need someone who has watched the batch misbehave, which is why this sits at 11 and not 6.
Some physical or field component. You are in the plant for commissioning, line-breaking permits, sampling off-spec product, and climbing the structure to find where the exchanger is fouling, but most weeks are still office hours in Aspen and Excel with the field time bounded by unit access and PPE — that split, rather than a full-time operations role, puts it at 11 instead of the 15+ an operations supervisor gets.
Certification preferred, not legally required. The industrial exemption in almost every state means the refinery or specialty-chem employer, not you, carries the engineering liability, so most process engineers never take the PE; the 8 credits the fact that PE stamps do bind consulting and EPC work and that OSHA 1910.119 PSM demands documented engineering competence, without pretending you personally sign anything.
Some relationship component. Your standing comes from operators and plant managers believing your number when you say the reactor can run 15 degrees hotter, which is real relational capital built over years on one unit — but the deliverable is a datasheet or a HAZOP action item that any competent engineer could have produced, and clients buy the firm's process license, not you, so this lands at 7.
Exists to be accountable for ambiguous calls. When you approve a relief scenario, sign off on a change of raw material supplier, or lead the PHA that decides a deviation is tolerable, being wrong produces a runaway reaction or a toxic release with names attached to it — the 14 reflects that these calls are genuinely ambiguous and consequential, while stopping short of 18 because MOC review boards, PSM procedure, and corporate process-safety standards structure the decision around you.
