The work is brazing line sets in attics, pulling vacuums, charging refrigerant to superheat/subcooling targets, and chasing intermittent electrical faults in equipment that was installed badly a decade ago — none of which a language model or current robot can do. AI eats the paperwork layer: load calculations, quoting, permit forms, diagnostic lookup, and dispatch scheduling. EPA 608 certification is federally required to handle refrigerant, and most states license HVAC contractors, which keeps a credentialed human on the invoice.
Tasks largely resist digitisation. Recovering a charge, cutting and brazing a new line set, pulling a 500-micron vacuum, and then finding the intermittent short in a 15-year-old air handler's blower harness are sequential physical judgments in a crawlspace — the only pieces software takes are the Manual J and the invoice, which is why this sits at 17 rather than 20.
Hands-on in uncontrolled environments. Nearly every billable hour is spent on a roof curb, in a 130°F attic, or under a condenser pad with a manifold gauge set and a torch, working on units whose access panels, clearances, and prior hack repairs differ at every address — no fixture or controlled cell exists for this.
Licensed human required and personally liable. EPA Section 608 is a federal precondition for even opening a sealed system, and in most states the contractor's license and the mechanical permit carry a named human for the gas line, condensate, and combustion venting — but the individual installer often works under someone else's license number, which keeps this at 13 rather than the high teens where the license and the signature are the same person.
The human relationship is the product. Repeat maintenance-agreement customers and the builders or property managers who hand you the whole subdivision call you specifically because you know which units you installed and where the leaks were — but emergency no-cool calls in August still go to whoever answers, so the relationship is a strong pull rather than the entire product.
Meaningful discretion. Deciding whether a compressor with high head pressure and low superheat gets a TXV, a coil, or a full changeout — and whether that cracked heat exchanger means red-tagging a furnace and leaving a family without heat — are calls made alone in the basement with no supervisor to ratify them, though refrigerant charging and combustion analysis do have published targets you're measured against.
