The job is measuring, cutting, fitting, and wiring or banding fiberglass, calcium silicate, and foam onto hot pipes, chillers, boilers, and ductwork — often in crawl spaces, mechanical rooms, and on ladders in live plants. None of that is screen work, and no robot handles the geometry of a 4-inch elbow behind existing pipe hangers. The exposure here is economic (construction cycles, prefab jacketing) and physical (asbestos, confined spaces), not AI.
Tasks largely resist digitisation. Fitting removable blanket insulation around a valve body that already has three hangers and a conduit run through the clearance means field-measuring, scribing, and re-cutting on the spot — there is no digitisable version of shoving a mitred fiberglass gore into a 90-degree elbow at 220°F, which is why this sits at the ceiling rather than in the mixed band.
Hands-on in uncontrolled environments. The work happens on ladders and scaffolds in live boiler rooms, in crawl spaces and pipe chases, kneeling on cold decks with mastic and banding tools, and sometimes inside an asbestos containment under a respirator — uncontrolled environments where the temperature, dust, and access change every day, which is exactly what a 20 describes.
Certification preferred, not legally required. There is no state licence to insulate a chiller line, but OSHA 1926.1101 asbestos work requires documented training and Class I/II competent-person status, plus lead/asbestos abatement certification in many states and EPA/state cards for removal work — real credentials that gate the job without making any individual personally liable for the finished system, hence 8 rather than 15.
Some relationship component. Repeat call-backs come from the mechanical contractor and plant maintenance chief who know your crew won't leave a wet-insulation sweating line or a torn jacket in a food plant audit, but the bid still goes to the low number on the spec, so the relationship helps you get invited and doesn't win the award — a 9.
Meaningful discretion. You decide vapour-barrier orientation on a cold line, whether an existing jacket is asbestos and needs a stop-work call, and how to detail a penetration so it holds a fire rating — decisions with consequences, but the spec sheet and ASTM/insulation thickness tables set most of them, which keeps this in the mid discretion band rather than the top.
