The modal mechanical engineer splits time between screen work that AI is rapidly absorbing — CAD modeling, tolerance stacks, FEA/CFD setup, spec and report writing, BOM and vendor comparison — and physical work that it cannot: standing at a test rig figuring out why the prototype cracked, walking a factory line, arguing with a supplier about what is actually manufacturable. Licensure is a real but partial shield: PE stamps matter in HVAC/building systems, pressure vessels, and forensic work, while most manufacturing and product engineers operate under the industrial exemption with no signature requirement. What survives is ownership of design decisions whose failure mode is injury, recall, or a shut-down production line.

10-year outlook: Headcount per project falls as AI eats drafting and routine simulation, but engineers who own hardware validation, manufacturability, and stamped or safety-critical sign-off stay in demand through the 2030s.
