The control-room half of this job — watching flow rates, pressures and tank levels, logging readings, sequencing transfers — is exactly what SCADA and DCS automation has been eating for two decades, and AI-assisted anomaly detection accelerates it. What holds is the field half: walking the line, lining up valves and manifolds, pulling samples, spotting a weeping flange or a plugged strainer, and executing lockout/tagout during upsets. The modal worker in a refinery, tank farm, or pipeline terminal survives as a field operator with fewer peers per facility, not as a gauge-watcher.
Mixed — a routine tier and a judgment tier. Remote-start pumps, automated tank gauging and PLC-driven transfer sequences already handle the setpoint changes, alarm acknowledgement and shift-log entries that used to fill a tour, but nobody has automated cracking a manifold valve, changing a strainer basket, or repacking a leaking seal on a rotating pump — roughly half the shift is still work only a body in the unit can do, which is why this sits at 10 and not 4.
Hands-on in uncontrolled environments. You work outdoors on tank dikes and loading racks in whatever weather the shift brings, climbing to gauge hatches, handling hoses and swing arms, working around hydrocarbons, H2S and pressurized lines under FRC and gas monitor — 16 rather than 20 only because the plant is a mapped, fixed facility with fixed piping rather than a new uncontrolled site every day.
No licence, no signature requirement. No state licence gates this work; a TWIC card, HAZWOPER/HAZMAT awareness and site-specific operator qualification get you on the property, and when a transfer overfills a tank the citation lands on the operating company under PHMSA or the EPA SPCC plan, not on your personal ticket, so the 4 reflects credentialing overhead only.
Anonymous artifact production. Nobody buying gasoline, asphalt or slurry knows your name; your output is a metered volume and a signed transfer ticket, and the only relationship that matters is shift-to-shift handover with the next operator — which is procedural, not a product.
Meaningful discretion. Most of the shift runs off written transfer procedures, line-up checklists and alarm response guides, but you decide in real time whether a pressure trend means a plugged strainer or a downstream leak and whether to shut down and lock out before calling anyone — genuine discretion inside a narrow window, which is 8 rather than 14 because the escalation path to the console and unit supervisor is short.
