Moving locomotives between service tracks, coupling and uncoupling equipment, and spotting cars on yard leads is physical work in weather, mud, and moving-equipment hazards — language AI does none of it. But the threat here isn't chatbots, it's remote-control locomotive systems and automated yard switching, which railroads have already used to cut ground and hostling crews, plus PTC-era software that handles routing and speed enforcement. The modal worker is a yard-based operator whose sequencing decisions are increasingly dictated by a yard management system.
Mixed — a routine tier and a judgment tier. Coupling air hoses, tying handbrakes, and riding the point to spot a car in a dark yard still needs a body on the equipment, but the sequencing, throttle, and brake application that used to be the engineer's craft are exactly what Beltpack/LOCOTROL remote-control operation and yard management software already do — which is why this sits at 11 and not 15.
Hands-on in uncontrolled environments. You are on ballast and switch stands in rain, ice, and 100-degree heat, climbing on and off moving locomotives, reaching between cars to lace air hoses, and working around live third rails or unprotected shove movements — a 15 rather than 18 only because the yard is a bounded, mapped, slow-speed environment rather than open road or mainline territory.
Certification preferred, not legally required. You hold FRA 49 CFR Part 240 certification with efficiency testing, rules exams, and decertifiable offenses on your record, but hostling and dinkey work is often performed under restricted or utility-employee status with the road crew, trainmaster, or yardmaster holding the movement authority, so the personal exposure is real but narrower than a certified road engineer's.
Anonymous artifact production. Nobody in the yard requests you by name; the shipper sees a car spotted on time and the incoming crew sees a locomotive fueled, sanded, and on the ready track, which any qualified hostler on any shift could have produced.
Meaningful discretion. You make live calls on shove distances, point protection, and whether a track is clear before making a joint, but those calls are bounded by GCOR/NORAC rules, restricted speed, and a switch list from the yardmaster, so the discretion is tactical rather than ownership of an ambiguous high-stakes decision.
