The core of this job is hands on skin: cleansing, extractions, chemical peels, waxing, microdermabrasion, lash and brow work, and applying product to a specific face in a specific chair. AI can already handle the paperwork tier — intake forms, product recommendations from a photo, rebooking reminders, social content — but it cannot perform a manual extraction or judge how a client's skin is reacting mid-peel. Nearly every state requires an esthetician license to touch a client's skin, which adds a real regulatory floor, and repeat clients book a specific person, not a service.
Tasks largely resist digitisation. Manual extractions, waxing strips, lash isolation with tweezers, and monitoring frosting during a glycolic peel are all done by fingers on a specific person's face — the only tasks a model can take over are intake notes, product upsell suggestions, and booking, which is why this sits at 16 rather than a full 20.
Hands-on in uncontrolled environments. You work in a treatment room with a client reclined under a mag lamp, steamer, wax pot, and machine handpieces, contorting over a face for 60-90 minutes and reading skin by touch and feel — an 18 reflects that the environment is at least a controlled room you set up yourself, not a client's home or a construction site.
Licensed human required and personally liable. Nearly every state board requires 600-1500 hours of esthetician training and a license that can be suspended for a burn or infection, and the person holding that license is the one who applied the acid — it stops short of 15+ because scope is capped at the epidermis, with anything deeper pushed to a medical director or NP whose license absorbs the real risk.
The human relationship is the product. Clients rebook the specific esthetician who knows their rosacea triggers, their wax pain tolerance, and where they break out before a wedding, and they follow that person when she changes spas — a 15 rather than 18 because walk-in facials at hotel spas and chains do get filled by whoever is on shift.
Meaningful discretion. You decide whether to skip extractions on inflamed skin, drop peel strength, or refuse service on active cold sores or recent Accutane use, but those calls run against contraindication checklists and consultation forms rather than being open-ended, which puts it at 10 and not 15.
