Pulling dents, replacing quarter panels, welding and riveting mixed-material structures, blending paint under a booth light — none of that is text or screen work, and no robot on the market can do it on a uniquely crumpled car. What AI is already eating is the paperwork half of the job: photo-based damage estimating, insurance claim documentation, parts ordering, and repair-time calculation. The modal worker survives on hands; the estimator-heavy tier of this occupation is the part under real pressure.
Tasks largely resist digitisation. Sectioning a rail to OEM position, straightening a unibody on a pull frame with tram gauges, squeeze-type resistance spot welding boron steel, and hand-blending a three-stage pearl into a half-panel are all one-off jobs on a car crumpled in a way no other car ever was — hence 17 rather than a full 20, since the estimating, blueprinting and parts-sourcing side of your day is already being done off a phone photo.
Hands-on in uncontrolled environments. You work inside the wreck: kneeling in a floorpan, reaching behind an apron with a stud welder, sanding overhead, moving between the frame rack, the welding bay and a downdraft booth in a respirator — 19 because there is essentially no part of the repair itself that happens sitting down.
Certification preferred, not legally required. No state licenses body repairers; I-CAR Platinum, ASE B2-B5 and OEM certifications (Honda, Ford aluminum, GM) get the shop on a direct-repair or certified-collision list and can be contractually required for structural welds, but the comeback and the liability land on the shop's garage-keepers policy, not on a personal license you could lose.
Some relationship component. Most of your work arrives through insurer DRP assignment and the customer never sees you — but repeat retail work, the dealership body shop's relationship with its service drive, and the customers who come back to the guy who matched their tri-coat put this at 10 instead of anonymous.
Meaningful discretion. Deciding repair-versus-replace on a rail, whether a pull has work-hardened metal past safe limits, and reading the OEM procedure that forbids heat on UHSS are calls that decide whether the car crushes correctly in the next collision — 13 rather than higher because those calls are increasingly constrained by written OEM repair procedures and insurer approval on the estimate.
