Nearly every core task — setting piano string tension by ear and touch, regluing cracked violin seams, replacing pad seats on a saxophone, voicing hammers, straightening dented brass — is tactile work on a one-off object with no two instruments behaving alike, and robotics cannot approach it. AI's real reach here is small: electronic tuning apps and inventory/quote paperwork already exist, and neither replaces the technician. The actual threat to this occupation is demand and shop economics — school music budgets, cheap imported instruments, an aging customer base — not language models.
Tasks largely resist digitisation. Reaming a clarinet tenon, filing hammer felt to change tone, bending brass tubing back into round after a dent, and shimming a bridge to correct action are all judged mid-cut by feel and sound on an instrument with unrepeatable wood, felt, and lacquer condition — the 19 rather than 20 concedes only that a chromatic tuning app now handles the pitch-reading step of a piano tuning, though not the pin-setting.
Hands-on in uncontrolled environments. You work inside the piano case, under the harp, with the horn on the bench and the bell on the mandrel — bench vises, torches, buffing wheels, hide glue pots — and half of piano tuning happens in the customer's living room or a school band room, not a controlled shop, which is what pushes this past the fixed-bench trades at 19.
No licence, no signature requirement. There is no state licence to repair instruments; the Piano Technicians Guild RPT exam and NAPBIRT membership are voluntary credentials that customers ask about but no statute requires, so nothing in law makes you the person who must sign off — the 3 reflects those credentials existing at all rather than any legal protection.
The human relationship is the product. Piano tuners hold clients for decades on a semi-annual schedule and a professional violinist chooses one luthier for setup because that person knows how their instrument responds — that repeat, name-requested relationship is why it sits at 14; it is not higher because a dented trumpet dropped off at a music store gets fixed by whoever is at the bench.
Meaningful discretion. You decide whether a cracked soundboard gets shimmed or the piano is not worth the repair, whether to refinish an old instrument and destroy its value, and how far to voice hammers before the owner's tone preference is overshot — real discretion with money and irreplaceable instruments at stake, but the failures are recoverable and rarely involve anyone's safety, which keeps it at 12 rather than the high teens.
