The technician tier is built around going to the site: walking production floors, running noise dosimeters and air sampling pumps, checking machine guarding, fit-testing respirators — none of which a model does. But the paperwork half of the job (writing inspection reports, coding OSHA 300 logs, cross-referencing standards, building safety training decks, trending incident data) is already largely drafted by AI, and the technician role is defined as data collection under a safety manager's or CIH's direction, so the consequential calls and the liability sit above you. Certification (OHST, CSP-track) is employer-preferred, not legally mandated, so there's no signature moat.
Mixed — a routine tier and a judgment tier. Half your day — pulling a personal air sampling pump onto a worker's collar, calibrating a dosimeter, running quantitative respirator fit-tests, checking lockout/tagout tags and guard interlocks on a press line — cannot be done from a screen, but the other half (drafting the inspection writeup, coding injuries onto the OSHA 300 log, matching a finding to the right 1910 subpart, building the annual hazcom training deck, trending DART rates) is exactly what a model drafts in a first pass, which is what puts this at 10 rather than in the resistant band.
Hands-on in uncontrolled environments. You are on production floors, in confined-space entries, on scaffolds and roof edges, in noise above 85 dBA and around chemicals you're sampling for, wearing the PPE you enforce — 13 rather than 17 because the environments are industrial sites someone else already controls and hazard-mapped, not disaster scenes or open field work with no site owner.
Certification preferred, not legally required. OHST, CHST or CSP-track credentials get you hired and get you taken seriously in an OSHA walkaround, but no statute requires a licensed technician's signature on an air sampling result or a JHA — the CIH stamps the exposure assessment and the safety manager signs the abatement plan, which is why this sits at 5 and not at 2.
Some relationship component. Plant supervisors and union safety reps let you into their areas, and shutting down a line goes smoother when the crew knows you, but the deliverable is a sample result, a log entry, or an inspection finding that stands on its own numbers — a different technician with the same pump gets the same reading, so the relationship smooths access rather than being the product.
Meaningful discretion. You decide whether to sample this worker or that one, whether a guard gap is a recordable finding or a coaching moment, and whether to pull someone off a task on the spot — real calls made alone on the floor — but sampling strategy, exposure interpretation against PELs, and the citation-level decisions route to the CIH or safety manager, which caps this at 8.
