Nothing a welder does is text or screen work — reading a fit-up, controlling heat input on a warping joint, and running a root pass overhead in a pipe rack are physical judgment tasks language AI cannot touch. The real pressure is older and mechanical: robotic welding cells already own high-volume repetitive seams in auto and heavy manufacturing, and vision-guided cobots are creeping into shorter production runs. The modal welder sits between those worlds — shop fabrication is partly automatable, while field, repair, pipe, and structural work stays stubbornly manual.
Tasks largely resist digitisation. At 16 rather than 19, the split is honest: a robotic cell can run a repeating fillet on a jig all shift, but nobody has automated a 6G root pass on a misaligned pipe joint in a trench, a cracked casting repair, or tacking structural steel forty feet up where fit-up gaps change every joint.
Hands-on in uncontrolled environments. 19 because the work is the body — striking an arc with a hood down, feeling puddle behavior through the rod, working in confined tanks, on scaffold, in wind and rain, dealing with spatter, fumes, and positional welds where the only sensor is your hand and eyes at eight inches from molten metal.
Certification preferred, not legally required. 9 sits at the top of the certification band and below licensure: AWS D1.1 or ASME Section IX qualification is procedure- and position-specific and can be pulled on a failed bend or RT shot, but the welder signs no stamp — the PE, the CWI, and the fabricator's QC program carry the code liability on the weldment.
Some relationship component. 7 reflects that a finished weld is judged by X-ray, mag particle, and visual inspection rather than by who ran it, yet pipefitting foremen and shop supers hire the same hands repeatedly because a welder with a low reject rate and no rework is known personally, not by resume.
Meaningful discretion. 11 is where real discretion without ownership lands: you choose travel speed, amperage, bead sequence, and whether to grind out and rerun a pass or gouge back to base metal, but the WPS fixes the process, filler, preheat, and interpass temperature, and deviating from it is a nonconformance, not a judgment call.
