This is hands-on plant work: loading parts into wash lines and pickling tanks, mixing and testing acid and caustic baths, adjusting temperature and dwell time, clearing jams, and hauling racks — none of which a language model touches. The real threat is not AI but conventional capital investment: automated closed-loop wash lines, robotic part handling, and inline bath sensors that eliminate the tender rather than assist them. Logs, batch records, and inspection notes are already the easiest part to digitize, so the paperwork share of the job shrinks first.
Mixed — a routine tier and a judgment tier. At 13 the physical loop — hanging parts on racks, rodding out a clogged spray manifold, titrating a hydrochloric bath and dosing inhibitor — still needs a body on the floor, but titration strips, conductivity and temperature probes, and PLC-controlled dwell timers already do the measurement-and-adjust half of the shift, which is what keeps this out of the 14-plus band.
Hands-on in uncontrolled environments. 16 reflects standing over open pickling tanks in acid fume with face shield, apron and respirator, moving 50-pound baskets with hoists or by hand, working on wet grated floors near 180-degree caustic wash chambers — uncontrolled enough that OSHA treats bath entry as a confined-space and PPE hazard, though it is still one fixed plant bay rather than a shifting outdoor site.
No licence, no signature requirement. A 4 is right because no state licences a wash-line tender: RCRA hazardous-waste and DOT hazmat training plus the employer's HazCom program are all that's required, and when a bath goes out of spec or a spill hits the drain the fine lands on the facility's permit holder and EHS manager, not on you.
Anonymous artifact production. 3 is honest — the next department judges the parts, not you; a clean, oxide-free, spot-free surface passing a water-break or salt-spray check is anonymous output, and the shop reassigns tanks between tenders shift to shift without a customer ever knowing.
Executes defined procedures on defined inputs. 6 fits because the decisions are bounded by written work instructions and spec sheets: bath concentration ranges, immersion times, rinse cycles and rejection criteria are set by process engineering, and anything off-spec — a bath that won't hold titration, unexpected smut or flash rust — gets escalated rather than judged by the operator.
