The monitoring core of this job — watching temperature and pressure gauges, adjusting burner and damper settings to hold a curve, logging batch data, timing cycles — is exactly what PLCs, closed-loop sensors, and process-control software already do better and continuously; this displacement has been underway for decades and predates LLMs. What holds the job in place is the physical half: charging and drawing kilns, hooking rigging, breaking up slag and clinker, swapping thermocouples, and reacting to a jam or a refractory failure at 1,400°F, all in hot, dusty, variable plants where robots remain expensive and brittle. The modal worker is a tender on an increasingly instrumented line, so the trend is fewer operators covering more furnaces rather than none.
